I don’t have any personal planets or placements in Scorpio, but I feel a deep sense of camaraderie with all the Scorps out there. I’m a Gemini. I know what it’s like to be born under one of the most scorned signs of the zodiac.
Scorpio is a fixed water sign. Have you ever observed a large container of stagnant water over time? I grew up in the suburbs with a poorly maintained backyard pool, so trust me when I say that shit can get gnarly.
We can stand on the edge of a stagnant pool and wrinkle our noses at the discolored water, or we can approach it from an alternative perspective. Left alone for a long enough period of time in the right climate, still water can house a veritable ecosystem of its own — think frogs, algae growths, the biggest communal bird bath you’ve ever seen.
There is life in death. Summer ends, the pool closes, and the still water atop the shoddily applied pool cover teems with new life until it eventually freezes over. In the spring, that water thaws, and the cycle renews come June.
We live in a world so hellbent on ignoring the inevitability of death — and obsessed with individual benefit over our collective wellbeing — that this natural give-and-take makes many of us uneasy. But not Scorpios.
Scorpio placements embrace transformation. They know decay is as much a part of life as growth. And it’s not always a pretty process to watch (I’m looking at you, leaf-peepers). Renewal usually comes after an excavation or purge. That shit can be messy and dark and all-consuming and, yes, even gross. When we dig below the surface of anything, literally or figuratively, we never really know what we’ll unearth. We just can’t see it.
When people write off Scorpios as brooding or carnal, it is because they fear the radical, uncomfortable nature of transformation. Likewise, when people dismiss Geminis as gossipy or two-faced, it stems from an inability to recognize nuance or duality, two concepts that contradict the socially sanctioned impulse to put everyone and everything in neat, unambiguous categories.
We all have a little bit of every sign in each of our birth charts. This is one of my very favorite things about astrology: We’re all so much more than our Sun signs! Hell, even the “empty” houses in our birth charts have meaning!
If that bothers you, I encourage you to explore why. Perhaps there’s an underdeveloped part of yourself you see in the archetype of that one sign you just can’t stand. All I hear when you say you detest Scorpios or Geminis is you hating on yourself.
Today’s Moon: There’s a New Moon in Scorpio today (November 4). It’s intense, but then again, what astrological phenomenon involving Scorpio isn’t intense? Taurus risings, Leo risings, Scorpio risings, and Aquarius risings will feel this energy most directly. (Look to wherever Scorpio falls in your chart, as well as your natal Mars placement, for more personalized insights.)
New Moons mark new beginnings but not always the kind we choose or even want. The Moon, the fastest-moving celestial body astrologers observe, struggles in Scorpio, a sign that favors penetrative, laser-focused deep-dives over transient experiences. This Mars-ruled lunation might dredge up some old wounds. It’s happening opposite Uranus, the planet of disruption and innovation, and square Saturn, the greater malefic associated with obstacles and The Long Game™️. Expect the unexpected, but know that whatever inner demons rear their ugly heads this week have resurfaced to help propel you forward, not hold you back.
Fave astro post: Isaiah’s Mars in Scorpio post made me surprisingly emotional.
